Overview

The University of Pennsylvania Division of Student Engagement (VPSE) is seeking current Penn graduate and professional students who are interested in serving as graduate assistants(GAs) for current Penn undergraduates; for 6th grade – 12th grade students attending public and public charter high schools in the School District of Philadelphia, and for veterans.

Some GAs will be hired to work with Penn undergraduate students, to promote their University engagement and their enrollment in graduate and professional programs. Another crucial goal of VPSE is to increase collaboration between the University and the School District of Philadelphia during a time of heightened and continuing need in the face of unprecedented interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, an additional core component of VPSE programming is to immerse School District of Philadelphia public, parochial, and charter school students in academic, career, and post-secondary preparatory experience with synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and live content.

VPSE expects to choose GAs who:

  • evidence high expectations, and a consistently high regard, for the talents of all students.
  • are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about synchronous and asynchronous activities to support learning.
  • can provide rich, interactive, mission-aligned content and creative pedagogy.
  • can establish authentic relationships, who can work collaboratively with participants, University, and SDP colleagues.
  • place participants’ interests and aspirations at the heart of the program experience

GAs will be responsible for varying work depending on the VPSE program that they are hired to support and will receive hourly pay for their participation. Just as a reminder, pay will be subject to taxes. Hours will vary, but there will also be flexibility in the timing of the programming with many opportunities for late afternoon and early evening programming

The three VPSE programs that are being highlighted to GSE students are:

  1. PENNRSSA: (Hybrid Program) • (17) Graduate Assistants - June 5 thru July 28, with the opportunity to continue work in the Fall
  2. Talent Search Program: (In-person Program) • (2) Program Assistants – 5/1 through 8/31, with the opportunity to continue work in the Fall.
  3. Veterans Upward Bound Program: (Hybrid Program) • (3) Graduate Student Workers Graduate Student Workers, 8/1/24 through 7/31/25
