Overview

Penn Carey Law is committed to cultivating and nurturing a diverse, inclusive, and highly engaged community. To that end, in May 2019, the Office of Equity & Inclusion (E&I) was launched, with the purpose of strengthening equity and inclusion initiatives at Penn Carey Law.

The Office of E&I collaborates with students, staff, alumni, and faculty to pursue this mission through three primary modes: consultation, capacity building, and community engagement. Since 2019, these efforts have included establishing the inaugural Student Advisory Board, Alumni Advisory Board, and the Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander Scholars Program.

This position will allow our GA to be involved in a variety of projects, where no two days look the same. There is always amazing free food and interaction with incredible Law Students.

Required Duties

Events

Assist the Office of Equity & Inclusion in planning and managing events that promote the Office’s mission, ranging from meetings for our student leaders to larger events focused on training and/or promoting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Our GA will take responsibility of the following:

  1. Work with staff to plan and support all Equity & Inclusion events.
  2. Assist with events, virtual or in-person.

Communications

Continually update a web presence for Equity & Inclusion Initiatives that is fresh, creative, and up-to-date leveraging multiple platforms to reach audience within the law school and beyond. Publicize programs, achievements, and relevant news.

Coordinate with various entities to create resonant messaging for our audience and keep our brand consistent. Coordinate with the Communications & Programs Manager to produce and receive guidance when necessary.

Our GA will take responsibility for the following:

  1. Draft communication materials for events.
  2. Produce weekly e-newsletters, highlighting diversity, equity, and inclusion events at Penn Carey Law and the broader University community.
  3. Create and grow E&I’s blog presence.
  4. Develop and maintain meeting records.
  5. Develop and maintain profiles on different constituencies. They will contribute to the annual report and website content.

Research & Data Analysis

The GA will conduct various research projects related to the activities of the Office of Inclusion and Engagement. In the past, the GA has conducted research regarding diversity funds, pipeline programs, orientation programs, and more, at other institutions of higher education.

The GA will also be responsible for:

  1. Conducting research to update and maintain existing diversity, equity, and inclusion resources and create original resources for the Penn Carey Law School; Ex. DEI Glossary, DEI Style Guide
  2. Conducting research to benchmark diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and infrastructures at comparable institutions

The GA will also work with staff to analyze data related to diversity, equity, and inclusion at Penn Carey Law. This data will serve to inform programming and initiatives of E&I.

Independent Project Tailor to Your Interests

We understand that a graduate assistantship is a formative experience in your Master’s program and to your professional development. Therefore, we hope to work with you to tailor your GA experience to fit your professional goals and strengths. Additional duties could be performed in the area(s) of alumni relations, leadership development, program management, student life, staff development, research, publicity, and/or office management.

This position involves working with multiple constituencies, so the possibilities for an independent project are limitless. We look forward to working with you to develop a substantial project that meets our mutual goals.
 

Preferred Qualification and Essential Skills

  • The ideal candidate will be an individual with strong interest and experience in working within diverse communities to promote equity and inclusion.
  • Competency in issues of social justice is required. Some of these issues include, but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, sexuality, disability, class, intersectionality, and more. General knowledge of these topics is required, with expertise in some preferred.
  • Working knowledge of student development and organizational administration structure.
  • Exceptional writing, critical thinking, organizational, and administrative skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, social media platforms, and mass communication tools like Mailchimp will be helpful, along with the ability and desire to learn new platforms for communication/publicity.
  • We seek a fast learner, who demonstrates initiative, discretion, and can effectively manage a variety of tasks with minimal supervision.
