Overview

The Graduate Student Life Manager (GSLM) will foster a positive residential environment and vibrant campus experience, primarily through strong supervision of student staff. The GSLM will be responsible for the overall management of a residential area of approximately 150 students, including the supervision of student staff. In addition, the GSLM will supervise, coach and contribute to the development of a regular calendar of daytime campus programming. The primary focus of the position is on student development and learning, within the context of building vibrant, inclusive communities at the University City location This position works closely with other members of the Residence Life team and Student Life staff to provide area leadership, programming, and a living environment that complements students’ educational experiences. Additional responsibilities include serving in a shared on-call emergency management rotation, assisting in the implementation of departmental initiatives such as Campus Life Assistant (CLA) / Resident Assistant Selection and CLA/RA Training, and working with Public Safety and Facilities Management to promote student safety and advocate for the physical care of residential spaces.

Required Duties

Supervision

  • Directly oversee a staff of 6-8 Campus Life Assistants and a residential population of approximately 150 residents
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings to discuss Student/Residence Life initiatives, promote paraprofessional growth and team development through staff learning and development opportunities
  • Coach and supervise the Campus Life Assistant team in developing and implementing a calendar of Student Life programming on the University City campus location in collaboration with Student Life partners
  • Conduct regular individual supervisory meetings with Campus Life Assistants
  • Participate in the annual recruitment, selection, training and ongoing evaluation of student staff members
  •  Campus Life Assistants’ budgets and track all programming, staff development, and building-wide funding

Community Development

  • Communicate with residents to follow up on incidents or emergencies that occur on campus; refer to other Student Life partners
  • Utilize community development as primary means to promote student engagement and learning
  • Develop, articulate, and enact clear vision for residential area that aligns with departmental priorities
  • Assist CLAs in the development and implementation of a community development plan for the residential community
  • Counsel students and work with staff regarding social, academic, and adjustment concerns
  • Provide support and mediation for students involved in roommate and/or community conflicts
  • Foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students by participating in departmental and university initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Assist with program development, implementation, and support of additional academic and/or residential learning communities

Building Management

  • Assist in the maintenance of building key/access records and management of room inventory and assignments
  • Monitor physical condition of residence halls, working collaboratively with Facilities and Housekeeping staff, hall staff, and residents to report and follow-up on work orders, damages, and facility emergencies
  • In collaboration with central office staff, assist with room changes, early move-ins/move-outs, and residence hall access for assigned residential areas

Residence Life Service

  • Participate in on-call duty rotation, maintaining immediate availability to CLAs and Public Safety staff members managing emergencies
  • Represent Residence Life on appropriate campus committees
  • Participate in and be present for critical Student Life and University events, including (but not limited to) orientation, RA/CLA training, move-in and move-out weekends, Family Weekend, Admitted Students Days, Housing Selection initiatives
  • Assist with promotion of Residence Life, especially through Admission events and development of social media content
  • Other duties as assigned

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with members of Student Life and others members of the University community to establish a positive campus environment in which students excel academically, spiritually, and personally.
  • Attend professional seminars, and/or conferences relevant to the responsibilities of the position. Participate in and contribute to the professional development efforts of the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Life.
  • Work respectfully with all staff, students, and parents regardless of their race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity, age, or disability.
  • Communicate the Jesuit philosophy, departmental mission, and University policies to the residential community, parents, students, and personnel as appropriate.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and serve as a positive role model to staff and students.
  • Serve on University and Student Life committees as necessary.
  • Other assigned duties.

Preferred Qualification and Essential Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and some prior Residence Life or Student Life experience.
  • Strong supervision, communication, and managerial skills are necessary.
  • Availability to live in the Living & Learning Commons at University City.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of Saint Joseph’s University.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotation throughout the time of service.

Preferred:

  • Concurrent enrollment in a Student Affairs (or closely related) graduate program

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • Shared on-call duty rotation for evenings, weekends, and University holidays; some evening/weekend hours in order to respond to incidents, attend programs, training sessions, and meet with students.
  • While employed in this position, you are required to live in one of the University’s residence halls. As such, included in your employment offer is the use of a furnished apartment in a residence hall with utilities. In addition, a university meal plan is available to you while the University is in session.
